I was the Head Curator for the Cultural Fusion Exhibition. This Exhibition “Cultural Fusion” focused on the artwork of seven graphic design students from VCUarts Qatar. It was a proud collaboration between the US Embassy, Qatar Museums, W Hotel and VCUarts Qatar. It was held at ART29 gallery at the W Hotel, in Qatar. The Exhibition travelled international and was exhibited in Washington, DC at the US Embassy headquarters and is now currently in Richmond, Virginia at the VCU Richmond Home campus.

FUSION SIGNS
Using shops signs to show a united front.
To help bridge a connection between Qatar and the United States, shop signs were used as visual inspiration to connect both countries and cultures.
A collection of online photos were used to combine both the vintage and contemporary signs from America. They were used as visual inspiration to compare to the unique and one-off signs scattered around Qatar. This combined both the mechanical with the handmade aesthetic.

The Year of Culture provides a platform to voice the culture of both nations. The design uses the familiar formal language of shop signs and their representation of their interior contents.
Using the simple and readable stacked type with contrasting colours, it should be able to distinguish some of the shared and different cultures present in Qatar and the United States.
The Maroon colour is to distinguish Qatar. As cliche as it may be, people in the United States don’t know about Qatar as a country, so the colour is there to present Qatar using visual elements. The beige colour represents both Qatar and the United States due to the barren land being the same colour.
